Thank you for taking the time to talk. Where are you this moment and how are you spending the today?
Thanks for having us and for the interview. We are currently in Port Elizabeth. Most of our day we spend it at work and then we go to the studio. But all good thanks for asking.
Please can you introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a DJ and producer duo from South Africa, specializing in Soulful House and Deep House. We love making music and collaborating with other artists.
Where are you based?
We are based in South Africa in the Eastern Province and city of Port Elizabeth
What is it you love most about the city in which you live?
It's called the friendly city due to welcoming nature of its people and the strong culture of unity. The city boasts great scenery and ocean life. It has historical buildings and ancient tales of its history.
How is the health of the music scene where you are?
The music scene is diverse, but it stands on the roots of high jazz influence and afro pop music. Electronic music also has a high following. House music culture is well received but not as popular as in the bigger cities.
How is the health of the music scene generally in your opinion?
There is a thirst for music, and the population is hungry for consumption. There are multiple avenues undiscovered, meaning there is a lot of upcoming producers, engineers and vocalists needing a platform to showcase their talents.
Who are the icons who have inspired the music that you make?
There are multiple pioneers locally and nationally. But what inspires us is a combination of international sound which we merge with African elements to try and create a signature sound. So DJ icons like Dj Christos, Vinny Da Vinci, Dj Fresh, Gken Lewis have paved the way for many producers and with their CD compilations introduced us to the likes of Louie Vega, Ralf Gulms, Terry Hunter, Frankie Knuckles and many more.
How did you come to meet the Vibe Me To The Moon crew?
Our mission has and will always be to put our music out there and that means aligning ourselves with artists and labels that compliment our sound and can do justice to our mission. The Vibe crew has a huge following and support from
big artists and it's aligned to a producer we follow Nightsteppaz. It was a no brainer to align with Vibe and in the future grow with the label and collaborate with its amazing artist catalogue.
Why did you feel the label was the right home for your release?
Following the labels movements and releases made the decision very easy. The achievements each release gets was a winning combination for us. It made us feel the artists releases are given full attention and the backing from the label that is very profound.
Give us an overview of your new release.
Our EP is a 4-track project boasting a combination of soul and deep house tracks that have a story to tell and align with its title Love Odyssey. We went for a vocal infused touch with melodic instruments to create a soulful ambiance in the songs and paired that with hard hitting drums and percussions to make the dance floors tremble.
How long did it take to come together? Did it flow easily, or did it take some time to perfect?
The EP took about 6 months to complete. We have a process we use where one starts a project and sends to the other to add or remove to have a framework on the direction of the track. We then come together and have a listening session to see what is lacking in the projects. Each person brings something different to the table but there is always consensus on the completeness of the song. I believe our system works as we have used it on all our prior releases.
Tell us a about any other artists involved in the release.
This was purely just the two of us.
Do you guys take some time - after you have made a track – to leave it alone for a while to evaluate?
It's always the best thing to not rush a project and give it time to breathe. Listen to it after a while to see if it still sounds the same after the adrenaline of creating it. This gives an opportunity to see if all elements complement each other and sound perfect for our liking and would it be pleasing to the audiences' ear.
Do you find the feedback of others is important to you in the production process?
Extremely important to see if we haven't lost our signature and tried to be something we are not.
It’s always good to get compliments and criticism to stay on top of your game and enforce being humble in this industry. We understand that not everyone is going to enjoy what every artist produces, but music is understood by different ears and musical minds. A song might not appeal to everyone, but never be discouraged.
What are some of the challenges in putting out music currently?
What’s tough is the knowledge of the music business and its red tape, and grey areas like publishing, marketing, exposure and being a household name. The under dogs rarely see success if they are not associated to a big name or endorsed. Also music is obtained or listened digitally and accessed anywhere anyhow. Exclusivity is rare and loyalty to a song is also rare because there are thousands of songs released daily. So there are release dates and seasons that come into play and also which style of house is suitable with the change in times.
What drives you to create music do you think?
We can say that it is inspired by what we listen to and the sound itself, and from there, passion follows which drives creativity.
What other artists do you think are making great music right now?
Sebb Junior, Stacy Kidd, Atjazz, Legendary LOUIE VEGA, Retrofract.
What was the last record you purchased?
That was Stacy Kidd - Let It Blow (Remix) and Look In My Eyes
What has been a highlight of the last year for you guys?
Was working with Sebb Junior, and the release of the Love Odyssey EP.
What can we expect next from Logo Alloy & Zam T
There’s a lot more coming from us — we’re currently working with Retrofract, collaborating on something with Henry Navarro, and preparing our forthcoming EP with Vibe to the Moon.
