Few songwriters are as poetic as Joni Mitchell. Here, she's combined her unmatched lyrical ability with deep chords that help you to imagine humidity suffocating green grass in the backyard.
Marvin Gaye - Is That Enough?
One of my favorite cuts from Marvin Gaye. His sense of bitterness on this album is unmatched, but it's quintessentially human. This particular track is freeflowing, loaded with plenty of melody to get lost in.
João Gilberto - Bésame mucho
The best rendition of a classic.
Nala Sinephro - Space 1
My entryway into ambient jazz. It forces us to slow down in a world that constantly demands we speed up.
Bryan Ferry - Don't Stop The Dance
After I've exhausted Avalon by Roxy Music, this is the record that I'm reaching for to scratch the sophisti-pop itch.
Françoise Hardy - La question
The title track from another record that I've worn out at home. The bossa nova instrumentation is punctuated by soaring string arrangements and Hardy’s whispering melodies.
Nina Simone - Isn’t it a Pity?
Nina Simone was operating on an entirely different wavelength from everyone else at the time. This devastating cover of George Harrison’s "Isn’t it a Pity?” will cause plenty of self-reflection.
Cameron Winter - The Rolling Stones
His work with Geese is great, but his solo album is a breathtaking work of lyricism and musicianship. The mellow nature of the music draws on the best moments from Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, and Nina Simone.
Sly and the Family Stone - Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)
Can you even consider it a cover version when it’s this good, this moving, and this complete? I don’t think so.
Jai Paul - Jasmine
I had the good fortune of being at one of the few Jai Paul shows to ever take place a couple of years ago at the Brooklyn Steel. His sound design, even in a live setting, left me floored. Jasmine is a perfect bridge between electronic music and good, old fashioned songwriting.
