Now that abstract hip-hop has come home to roost, Doseone and Jel of the East Bay's Anticon collective can count themselves partly responsible. The pair first emerged as Themselves, before Dose turned the weird up to 11 with the sound-art antics of cLOUDDEAD. Stepping back from that brink as Subtle, they added four other musicians for last year's solid A New White. The dumpster-diving messiah attitude is still intact, but drums, keyboards, electric cello, and guitar make Dose's surreal mumblings and Jel's paranoid production go down smoother. (TW)
