Mel Stuart US 1973 30th Anniversary Special Addition This rarely screened 1973 concert film is a must-see document of 100,000 people reaffirming Black pride and power on the 7th anniversary of the Watts riots. Known as the "Black Woodstock," it begins with Kim Weston and Reverend Jesse Jackson shouting out the Black National Anthem and the National Black Litany, and culminates musically with Issac Hayes, in shiny gold chain vest, laying down "Shaft." In between we are witness to a session of soul, rap, dance and fashion (check-out the statements in the stands). Highlights include the Staple Singers preachin' how to "Respect Yourself", The Rance Allen Group riffin' it up, Richard Pryor rippin' us up with comical socio-political comentary and all the while, Watts locals shedding light on the Black experience.
