MARIN CENTER PRESENTS BAY AREA PREMIERE OF BALLET FLAMENCO JOSÉ PORCEL IN EXCLUSIVE APPEARANCE, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1
SAN RAFAEL, CA – The fiery sensuality and exuberant joy of Flamenco comes to Marin Center October 1 as world-famous flamenco star, José Porcel and his company of 20 dancers and musicians ignite the stage with an explosion of rhythms, color and emotion. This folkloric celebration embraces all of the vitality and passion of the Spanish people. Porcel’s intricate nature and passion have made him the leading Spanish flamenco and choreographer since his professional debut in Spain in 1989. Ballet Flamenco José Porcel will take place on Saturday, October 1, at 8 p.m. at the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium, Avenue of the Flags at Civic Center Drive in San Rafael. Visit www.marincenter.org for more information. José Porcel, who was born in Sevilla, began dancing Andalucian folkloric dances and flamenco at the age of 13. After studying with some of the legends of flamenco, he made his professional debut with the Ballet de Valencia in 1989 and was promoted to soloist in the company the following year. In 1991, he choreographed his first flamenco work and in 1992, he directed and performed in his first flamenco company, in the Expo de Sevilla. After touring the United States with Clara Roman’s company in “Carmina Burana,” he was invited to join the Ballet Nacional de España, where he interpreted works including “Medea,” “Ritmos,” “Bolero de Ravel,” among many flamenco ballets. Within the Ballet Nacional, he worked with flamenco masters, constantly honing his craft. In 1999, Porcel danced as soloist in the company of Rafael Aguilar, interpreting the Toreno in “Carmen” during a major tour of Germany and Switzerland. A year later, he danced as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. In this same year he was contracted as the first dancer in the Compañia Española de Antonio Márquez, performing on tour around the world and at the Ópera de Paris for over 20 sold-out performances.
