CENTERSTAGE AT THE OSHER MARIN JCC PRESENTS DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET JUNE 21
SAN RAFAEL – Mandolinist Extraordinaire, David Grisman and his Quintet treat audiences to their 13th annual performance at CenterStage Summer Nights Series on Saturday, June 21 at 7PM. The Quintet’s unique blend of Bluegrass, Jazz, funk, pop, rock and flamenco – all the influences that shape the distinct sound of “Dawg” music has earned Grisman a reputation for unsurpassed style and virtuosity creating a niche for himself in the world of contemporary music. Guests are invited to sit outside under the stars in the Swig Field, pack a picnic dinner or treat yourself to delicious goodies available for sale. The legendary sound of the David Grisman Quintet (DGQ) has captivated audiences for more than two decades and has played hundreds of festivals and concerts around the world. Twenty-five years ago the DGQ’s first album revolutionized the world of acoustic string music and inspired a new generation of musicians. The Chicago Tribune credits Grisman with creating “distinctive form of American music and lifting it to the level of high art.”
Through the years, the DGQ has also been a breeding ground for new acoustic talent. The group’s rich history includes an alumni of acoustic greats like Tony Rice, Mark O’Connor and Mike Marshall, just to name a few. The award-winning ensemble currently includes David Grisman Quintet includes David on mandolin, Jim Kerwin on bass, Joe Craven on acoustic percussion and violin, Enrique Coria on guitar, and Matt Eakle on flute.
Once dubbed “The Paganini of the Mandolin” by the New York Times, Grisman has been praised for his mastery of the instrument as well as his talents as a composer, bandleader, teacher and record producer. After making many records for several major labels Grisman founded his won company Acoustic Disc, which he runs from his recording studio in Marin County. He has produced more than 45 critically acclaimed high quality recordings of acoustic music, 5 of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards.
