MILL VALLEY, CA – The fleet-fingered, steel string guitarist Alex de Grassi will bring his renowned deMania Trio to 142 Throckmorton Theatre, Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m., for an evening of musical diversity, where no genre is sacred. The trio, comprised of de Grassi on guitar, Chris Garica on tabla and Michael Manring on electric bass, takes the audience from Mingus to Bach, Indian to Appalachia, as well as their own unique compositions. With the mix of tabla, acoustic guitar and electric bass, these players bring together a wealth of traditions to make the classic sound new and the new sound familiar. In addition to appearing with deMania Trio, the Grammy-nominated de Grassi also appears solo in concert and has released 14 recordings, primarily on the Windham Hill label. Grammy nominee de Grassi, often cited as one of the top finger-style, steel-string acoustic guitarists, is known for his impeccable technique, innovative artistry and compelling compositions. Over the years, he has explored a variety of world music influences and has stretched his repertoire to include interpretations of jazz classics and folk melodies from the around the world. Percussionist Chris Garcia has studied tabla since 1978 under the guidance of Pandit Tarnath Rao, John Bergamo and Swapan Chadhouri at California Institute of the Art. His musical background includes performances in a wide variety of settings and collaborations with the fusion group Continuum, the world chamber ensemble Quarteto Nuevo, the Michael Vlatkovich Ensemble and duos with guitarist Nels Cline and woodwinds master Vinny Golia. He currently records and performs with the Grande Mothers Re-Invented, featuring former members of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention.
Michael Manring has developed an entirely new approach to playing bass that incorporates unorthodox tunings, techniques and methodologies. He has honed his virtuosic skills on his own solo albums, a long time collaboration with the late Michael Hedges, dozens of recordings as a session musician and thousands of concerts around the world. Manring has contributed to two gold records, garnered Grammy and Bammie nominations and numerous other awards.
