Part memoir and part science, Bill Hayes' new book, "Five Quarts: A Personal and Natural History of Blood," is a provocative, informative and deeply personal look at blood - the substance that shapes our lives. This lyrical work of narrative nonfiction spans history, literature, mythology and science to explore the remarkable fluid which runs through our bodies.
Bill Hayes studied writing at Santa Clara University and has worked for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Library Foundation, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. His work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, Details, Salon, Mother Jones, DoubleTake, and The Threepenny Review. Hayes' first book, "Sleep Demons: An Insomniac’s Memoir" was a selection of the Book of the Month Club.
