"Cry" by Godley and Creme from N/A

Self-explanatory, really.

"Rain and Tears" by Aphrodite's Child from N/A

R&T is played in its entirety during the last few minutes of the first segment of 3 Times, a fantastic Taiwanese film that I saw at BAM a few weeks ago. I can't believe I ever let my AC cd gather dust. This song is almost inexpressibly great, like a gift from a generous and benevolent higher power.

"Waiting On A Friend" by The Rolling Stones from Tattoo You

Mom played the hell out of Tattoo You back in the day so it took me a long time to come around to it, associated as it was with forced marches to Grandma's house and interminable drives to Canada. It wouldn't make my top 10 of RS albums, but it's got some gems of which this is perhaps the finest.

"I Remember The Railroad" by Gene Clark from Roadmaster

I was so obsessed with No Other for so long that I never gave Roadmaster the attention it was due until fairly recently. It's assumed its rightful place in heavy rotation. Perfect summer stoop music, perfect to drown out the sounds of the Sonics cover band that has decided to set up in my apt building instead of a practice space. Sigh.

"Downtown" by The B52's from S/T

Best cover ever? Maybe. Poor Pet Clark.

"James Carr" by The Dark End Of The Street from N/A

Stone cold classic. I will never, ever get tired of hearing this song. Carr's voice is so rich and anguished, totally spine-tingling coupled with the minimal arrangement.

"Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass?" by Buck Owens from N/A

"Prove It" by Television from Marquee Moon

This album, and this track in particular, is perfect for the end of lengthening days.

"Hard Times" by Baby Huey And The Babysitters from N/A

Perfect deep funk/soul with a tiny touch of psych rock from a Curtis Mayfield protege. Absolutely relentless groove and - yay- those lovely organ flourishes.

"You Bet I Would" by The Ronettes from N/A

Pre-Spector Ronettes. Bonkers vocals from Ms. Bennett. All-around ace track.
