"Novette No. 1 in D Flat Major (2nd Movement)" by Moondog from Sax Pax For A Sax

It was really nice and solid of a friend to give me these tuxed-out symphonic rendititions of L. Hardin, but I think I'm more about the Moondog 2-type rounds in 5s and 7s with those proto-Stereolab vox on the whole; this album's good to hear, and well-played no doubt, but a bit too stiffly swinging for me--this tune brings the cooldown, which I can get with.

"Where's The Money?" by Holger Czukay/Jah Wobble/Jaki Liebezeit from How Much Are They? 12"

Just found this 12" for cheap an hour ago--lots of it sounded great on 33, but this one holds up at 45 for sure. The monotone vox add to the overall Jah Division vibe...

"Mayday" by New Jack 90 from

Got sidetracked from what I wanted to do on my Dr. Rhythm, and came up with some 12-beat tech-house instead.

"The Ghost Of You Lingers" by Spoon from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Sort of like how I feel about Broken Social Scene (or Feist), I only like a portion of what these guys do, but the clean-but-chaotic production style definitely helps it click when it's good...The first 4 songs on this album would have made one killer EP.

"KISS-FM Mastermix, Summer 1983 (Side B)" by Shep Pettibone from VJS Productions.com Promo Mixes

Sounds best when walking down the street in the sunny springtime. Have been going back to some other nabbed mastermixes by Tony Humphries and Timmy Regisford & Boyd Jarvis, too, but this one was it for me the other day. From Shalamar into Liquid Liquid--thanks, VJS (full mix archive here)!

"Four Cornered Room" by WAR from The World Is A Ghetto

Wait for the flanged blastoff at 2:10; all about that constant kickdrum tap. "Just because we took our time to think and talk, for a much better understanding." Some serious L.A. hippie soul-picnic pow-wow mojo rising here. Zoom zoom zoooom!

"Machine Gun" by Portishead from Third

Sorry, it's already wellworn but I just needed to chim in on this pretty undeniable single...

"Love Spell" by Caress from Caress (1979)

From what seems to be the second of two self-titled albums from this Boris Midney alias. Found this piece of squishy space camp after breaking out the sadly-OP Strut "Edits by Mr. K" comp, getting back into Krivit's edit of "Catch The Rhythm", and finding a rip of the whole LP. (Just caught Space's 2005 TOTD of this under Midney's own name...)

Thanks for the tip, Mother--Ronnie & Ron putting their best Faces forward for this one...
