Todd Rundgren "All, in particular Love of the Common Man, It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference, A Dream Goes On Forever, Hello Its Me, What's Going On, & The Theme From Bimbo's" from Live At Bimbo's 365
File Under: -

Checked out Todd at Bimbo's last night. The show was sold out, but I got in at the last minute, taking my seat a second before he busted into "Love of the Common Man" (my fav todd jam). Bimbo's had the whole floor laid out with cocktail tables, giving the whole evening some weird sort of wedding or bar mitzvah vibe. There were definitely some janky moments in the performance (a whole pre-recorded lounge-style bit of the set that was not unlike Todd doing karaoke of his own songs--and Marvin Gaye's "I Want You"), but having become such a huge fan in the last year, it was really pretty amazing to see this guy bust out. His voice doesn't quite have the range it once did, but its still rich and crystal clear, and when he hit it, I got some goose-bumbs for sure. He was quite the comedian keeping us all giggling between (and sometimes during) songs... especially when he would bust six or four bars of a jokey on-the-spot little diddy about Bimbo's (he said he was in a "bimbos frame of mind, someplace Billy Joel has never been... if you catch my drift"). The encore was tight with Hello Its Me followed by A Dream Goes On Forever, on the piano, after which he came back out and rocked a rad tune on the guitar that I didn't know, and played a very Rundgren arrangement of 'What's Going On" that was surprisingly good. All in all, ill-advised older-guy moments aside, it was $25 well spent.
