Ian MacFarlane "The Expanding Universe" from Planetarium
File Under: Cosmic Concept

Finally acquired a copy of Ian MacFarlane's third full length record. Planetarium was a cassette only release from 1987. Once again it's a concept piece with two side long tracks broken into sections. I'm posting side 1 which is titled First Theory - The Expanding Universe . The sections are -Hidden leaves -Fingers pointing at the Moon -Mindbridge -Surrender to the Stars There is no list of instrumentation with this release, but the presence of electronics is very apparent. Synths and sequencers, electronic drums and on side two, some didjeridoo as Ian has a keen interest in aboriginal music. And here is a website with information on MacFarlane, his music and interests. And a source for this cassette.

An electronic fusion musik virtuoso! One of the music world's best kept secrets. I have transferred my cassette copy to CD even though Dolby isn't available anymore. Great thread. |

I think this album was also mastered by gifted Gil Matthews, drummer for well known Australian group "Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs" and recordng engineer. He mastered the earlier Macca albums too. He was brilliant and did a masterful job. Someone has the original master tapes which would be worth gold today. |

The beginning of side 1 is mind expanding. But the cyclic universe on side 2 sends shivers up my spine. He is a gifted muso and lyricist. Thanks a lot! |

There are some really haunting themes on this work. But I too like side two. At the end it suddenly makes sense. A moving and memorable performance. |

I'm a 'The Cyclic Universe' fan too. It looks like Ian Macfarlane reserves the best for last! The first side of the cassette is optimistic. The second side has a sadness that is excruciating. Are lyrics available? |

I checked around the Net tonight. All of a sudden there are many sites dealing with this cassette album. I can't be sure, but the sleeve image and text may have been taken from this site. Never mind, thanks to this site, Ian MacFarlane's fame is spreading wider and wider. I should have kept a record of the sites I visited for the record! Maybe next time! You can probably recover those sites by Googling "ian macfarlane" planetarium. Then try The Expanding Universe. |

Side 2 of the cassette is 'The Cyclic Universe'. The opening monlog is repeated in a different version at the end of the recording. I like side 2 better, especially 'A Mountain of Swords'. |

Grobschnitt, Handel and the Grateful Dead - that's a mix I would really like!
But I really enjoyed the Back From Beyond and The Expanding Universe tracks. This guy had something special. Keep up the good work. |

He is working on new material, but I'm not sure what form it's taking or if it will be released. He has mostly been writing history books. His music interests are pretty far ranging. Here's a quote from a recent email, "I also went though a classical music / electronics era that was interesting but unrecorded or released. Perhaps I am unusual being a fan of The Grateful Dead, Handel, Bruckner, Beethoven--and the German group Grobschnitt." |

I wonder if there is more recent material? I read somewhere that he went classical later on. |
