MarySol from remembers this:

I don't mean to be a buzz kill, but I can honestly only remember ONE good dream that I've ever had. I dream 2 or 3 times a week and for some reason, they are all absolutely horrifying. I had always been a happy child, and although I went through some dark times in high school, I am a perfectly healthy and happy individual. I don't watch horror movies, or read scary stories, But for some reason my dreams are painfully lucid and when I wake up I feel like I literally had just spent all night fighting or running. I have been stabbed, shot, raped, mutilated, tortured, burned alive, drowned, and torn apart by alligators, and I have been the one doing some of those things. I have seen everyone I have ever loved, killed or tortured, I have seen animals ripped apart, hit by cars, and cooked alive, I have watched mass suicides, and mass murders, ethnic cleansing, and ritualistic sacrifices, I've seen bombs drop and children burned to death, among many more scenarios.

I have spent my entire life trying to find someone, anyone who has experienced the same thing. Still, no one understands. For me, they aren't just dreams. They are the horrible places I must go, because I must sleep or they start to turn up in real life. When I was young I would wake up screaming or crying every single night, but I've learned to control that and now I just kind of grin and bear it...
I can't seem to find any dream or sleep specialist who can help me, and I can't really talk about it to anyone. I'm just looking for someone who understands and can help. Even just by talking about it.

Wow! Terrififying. I'm very surprised that no one seems to understand. These types of violent dreams are actually quite common! The important thing is to journal about your day before you go to bed. Next, journal your dreams the next morning. You will begin to see a connection to the dream imagery and whatever you experienced 24 hours before the dream. Dreams are rarely to be taken literally, of course. They are all pictures of what you are going thru emotionally at the time of the dream. It sounds like you have felt emotionally victimized by some waking situation in your life, or perhaps even from your pas history. What are you feeling torn up about or tortured over? If we don't understand the more basic gentle dreams, the mind will grab our attention by giving us nightmares! Very, very common! Journaling your feelings and activities the night before should really help you out!! The more you can learn what your dream is saying in connection to your world, the more they should begin to calm down. Good luck!
